At ELTHAM we have a number of co-curricular groups, activities and competitions that allow you to express yourself and COMMUNICATE.
SWEET TALKERS
The purpose of the co-curricular club 'Sweet Talkers' is to promote the use of the voice in articulating the English language. The group helps to build confidence in the use of the spoken word and create a heightened awareness of the organs of articulation and their functioning to produce language. Indulge in a fun context to recreate various genres where the English language has been used effectively eg film, speeches, poetry, choral verse, songs, plays etc. Students are provided with a range of opportunities to expand their linguistic repertoires, and one of the main ways to do this is through critical engagement with print and digital texts.

CRACK-A-CRYPTIC
The purpose of Crack-a-Cryptic is to enjoy the creativity involved in decoding clues and finding solutions to a cryptic crossword. The challenge will be the art to teasing out a clue, a discipline that calls for logic, interpretation, intuition and deduction as well as the ability to filter nuance and connotation. The skills required to solve cryptic crosswords involve important aspects of lexical memory: semantic information in the form of clues that indicate the meaning of the answer, and orthographic patterns that constrain the possibilities but may also provide hints to possible answers. This obviously gives students access to higher order thinking skills. Most importantly the Club intends to uncover the sheer magical beauty of language. The focus of the club will be on developing skills to crack cryptic crosswords, including:
1. Looking for “anagram” clues. ...
2. Considering whether a word needs to be reversed. ...
3. Finding the hidden answer indicator. ...
4. Doubling definition. ...
5. Soundalike. ...
6. Metaphoric interpretation of clues ...
7. Acrostic clues.
8. Spoonerisms
It's great fun when you crack the cryptic!
