John Brenan 13/1/1945 – 18/7/2024
It is with sadness that we learn of the passing of John Brenan, past Principal of ELTHAM College from 1987 to 1999, and College Life Member.
“We live by Admiration, Love and Hope” – William Wordsworth
In his first year at the College, John wrote, “There are many ways in which the students and staff have expressed their care and love for each other; there is abundant cause for hope in the future of our children, and through them, for the future of our community and country.” The special quality of connection and authentic relationship between staff and student that John fostered is still what makes ELTHAM College remarkable today.
ELTHAM College Principal and CEO Richard Lisle said, “In this moment of loss we reflect on John’s transformative contribution to ELTHAM College. During John’s leadership of ELTHAM College, the school experienced a period of significant progress, with expansion and improvements to facilities, including the Clarke Visual Arts Centre, the Multi-Purpose Building, the ovals ‘across the road’, the environmental reserve. The Senior School building, developed under this oversight, was named for him on its completion.”
College founder Les Clarke AM (deceased), commented on the occasion of John’s departure from the College in 1999, “His extraordinarily successful concept of the Year 9 City Campus has given College students a unique advantage for future life and work, expanding the College’s influence well beyond its Eltham location.”
Academic programs and results, drama, music, multimedia, foreign languages and international links, sport, outdoor education and student leadership were amongst the many areas in which the College moved powerfully forward under John’s leadership.
John’s intellect and character provide a lasting source of inspiration to those that knew him. Former College Principal Simon Le Plastrier remembers, “John was an innovative and inspirational educator who enhanced the College's academic standing and nurtured its spirit. His impact will be felt by many, as he was a cherished friend and mentor. John Brenan was truly a good man, and he will be deeply missed.”
At the end of his tenure, John was the longest serving Principal of ELTHAM College.
With heavy hearts, the ELTHAM College community remembers John, appreciating his many contributions, persistent energy and generous soul.
Our condolences to wife Sarah, and children Daniel, April and Rory.
There will be a celebration of John’s life on Monday 29 July, 10.30am, at the Church of All Nations in Palmerston St, Carlton.
Donations in his memory can be made to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and the Caritas Christi hospice facility via the St Vincent’s Foundation.
