On Thursday July 25, ELTHAM College Year 9 students Ada and Darcy won the Victorian AI for Good final with their “Bilby Buddy Conservation Drone”. This win has secured Darcy and Ada a trip to Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art in August to compete for the national title. The challenge has been hotly contested with more than 600 submissions from teams across the country.
The aim of the challenge is to raise awareness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it can be used to better the world. Three teams from ELTHAM College competed in the challenge and all participated in a one day hack-a-thon at Melbourne’s One Roof Co-Working space.
Teams used a design thinking methodology to develop solutions to problems broadly categorised: AI for Accessibility, AI for Earth and AI for Humanitarian Action. Darcy and Ada’s Bilby Buddy Drone uses an artificially intelligent drone to scare potential threats away from the dwindling bilby population.
ELTHAM College would like to congratulate Darcy and Ada on their stellar performance and wish them all the best at the national final.
