Alain D. Philips Language Award

Alain Philips came to ELTHAM as its first Vice Principal after a distinguished career at The King’s School, Parramatta, NSW. Alain occupied the position of Vice Principal between 1978 and 1993.

Alain was a gentleman whose scholarship and humour helped develop the character of ELTHAM in its formative years. He was an ardent supporter of languages and the Arts and brought his love of languages to his classroom teaching. Alain held a steadfast belief that self-discipline was an important ingredient in the development of a young person and he wanted the totality of the College experience to enhance that development.

The Award is designed to support a LOTE student to travel and/or study overseas. It comprises a $5000 award towards expenses in visiting and/or studying in an overseas country to further develop the applicants LOTE skills and experiences.

To be eligible for the Award you must be a Year 10-12 student studying a LOTE at ELTHAM College in the year of intended travel.

The Caltex Best All Rounder Award

The Caltex Best All Rounder Award is one of Australia’s best-loved secondary education recognition programs. For over 30 years it has been presented to thousands of final-year students, acknowledging their all-round contributions to their schools and communities. Participation has grown steadily. Last year, around 75% of all secondary schools in Australia took part and one of these, 95% said they would do so again.

What factors should you consider when making the award? Caltex suggests that recipients should excel in these categories, though not necessarily all of them:

  • Academic – achieves scholastically across a range of subjects
  • Attitude – willing to help others; makes selfless contributions
  • Personal conduct – exemplary at all times
  • Leadership – a role model for other students
  • Service – participates in school and community activities
  • Sport – represents the school without necessarily being a champion
  • Arts – participates enthusiastically in the cultural and artistic life of the school
