Outdoor Education

Mod A Glenelg River 2012 067Outdoor Education at ELTHAM College is experiential education which involves and engages students in a variety of situations. Outdoor Education aims to extend students beyond their previous experiences and utilises a range of activities and situations as vehicles to promote a more positive attitude towards SELF, OTHERS and the ENVIRONMENT.

Summary of Programs:

JUNIOR YEARS – Year 3 & 4:  Introduction to camping away from home
Year 3/4 students attend a 3 day experience at camp Gundawindi for a multi – activity program

JUNIOR YEARS – Year 5 & 6:  Introduction to the Outdoors
Year 5 students attend a 3 day camp at the Summit – a high adventure multi activity program
Year 6 students spend 4 nights base camping at Anglesea for an aquatic program that includes surf safety, surfing and canoeing.

MIDDLE YEARS  Years 7 & 8: Introduction to Journeying
Students choose two of three options, over the two year period. Students spend 5 days involved in one of the following outdoor journeys:

  • Mountain activities – rock-climbing, abseiling, bike riding, survival activity, bushwalk
  • Alpine Program – cross country skiing and overnight snow camp
  • River Program – paddling on the Glenelg River and visit PMR (Princess Margaret Rose) Caves

SENIOR YEARS: Leadership and Journeying

  • Year 9 students undertake a 5 day self guided hike around Wilson’s Promontory, with a strong emphasis on leadership.
  • Year 10 students have the option to select VCE unit 1 Outdoor and Environmental Studies which culminates in an expedition of 8 days duration, walking from Mt Feathertop to Mt Bogong
